Five ways to set the perfect Thanksgiving table. My way of setting the Thanksgiving table is perfect for my family. Our tradition throughout the years is to gather for our holiday meal around a beautifully set Thanksgiving table.
I was raised in Southern California so Thanksgiving meant warm weather and wearing shorts. The whole extended family would meet at Grandma's house. The adults were in the house cooking all day, while we kids played in the backyard. We would eat outside - there was the inevitable adults' table and a kids' table.
When my girls were young we made the trip down to their grandma's (aka my mom's) house for Thanksgiving. My mom moved the dinner indoors. She kept the tradition of the adult table and the kid table but expanded on the theme. My mom actually spent most of her time and effort decorating the kids' table. She had coloring books and colorful paper for making party hats, fall leaves, and turkeys. Baskets of candy corn and chocolate turkeys were set out too. The kids always helped Grandma roll out the dough for pumpkin pie which she made from scratch every year. These are fabulous Thanksgiving memories we will cherish forever.
Thanksgiving is different for us now. Our girls are young adults. It's become a smaller gathering. My husband usually works Thanksgiving, so we plan dinner when he is free (he's in the hotel business and it's one of their busiest days). The morning starts with the local charity 'turkey trot 5k'. Then my girls make their favorite side dishes and I make the turkey. The TV is streaming Netflix all day. I still like to set a beautiful traditional Thanksgiving table for this special holiday. We still take time before our meal to mention something we are thankful for. After wrapping up the leftovers from our feast and washing dishes we gather around the TV and watch a traditional Christmas movie while enjoying our pumpkin pie (unfortunately not homemade by my mom). It is so wonderful to have time to be all gathered together! We go to bed so full and grateful for the day, and dream of leftover turkey sandwiches!
However you celebrate your Thanksgiving holiday I hope your tradition includes a beautifully set Thanksgiving table! Happy Thanksgiving!
